Christmas 1594.

Tom is called away from the dress rehearsal of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' to receive terrible news his brother John has been found dead, frozen with terror in the branches of a tree.

Rumour has it that the Barguest, a mythical monstrous hound, is loose on the Scottish Borders . . .

Tom rides north to investigate – only to find himself embroiled in a dark, deadly political conspiracy, where even his swordsmanship and logic may not help him…

Can Tom solve the mystery of his brother’s death?

Or is there more than meets the eye to this Midwinter Murder?

‘A Midwinter Murder’ is the thrilling third instalment of Peter Tonkin’s ‘Master of Defence’ series, featuring Elizabethan sleuth and sword-master Tom Musgrave.

"The grimmer aspects of Elizabethan London come alive in Peter Tonkin's . . . Master of Defence series" Publishers Weekly

"Riveting tale full of fast action" Publishers Weekly on 'The Point of Death'.

Peter Tonkin was born in Northern Ireland, and was raised in the UK, Holland, Germany, and the Persian Gulf. He has written thirty novels including ‘The Point of Death’ and ‘The Coffin Ship’.

This book was originally published as 'The Hound of the Borders'.

Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent publisher of digital books.

Tom Musgrove is in London when he receives word that his brother John has been found dead in a tree to the north of England. It appears that he had been frightened to death. There are rumors starting that he was frightened by a large mythical (or maybe not so mythical) hound called the Barguest. Lord Henry of Elizabeth's court feels that there may be political influences seeking to spread the rumor for unknown reasons and he sends Tom to investigate.

It is an interesting story with a good deal of action concerning the rivalries and feuds between the various clans on the English/Scottish border. The reader soon finds that there are more mysterious goings on then a simple rumor of a huge hound. The descriptions of the countryside and weather are very realistic. One gets a good look at some of the 16th century ways of life on the Northern border. I had thought that this book would be more about the Elizabethan theater, actors and the goings on backstage. That was a bit disappointing but never the less it was an interesting novel.

While not up to Penman or Sansom, both of which are more historical fiction this is still a good tale of plots, murder, and mayhem in Elizabethan times. A rollicking good read and the author improves with each new book as all good authors should.
I did not get the download of the book and this is the only way I could figure out how to contact you.!
Laboured, well researched but not a patch on p.f. Chisolm writing of the same time
Only read first quarter ... very confusing
Good plot and characters are generally likeable.
another in this excellent series. Those uninterested in actual weaponry and it's uses may find the descriptions a bit much, but anyone who is interested in this will enjoy it and the descriptions do not outweigh the excellent story and plot pace.
Writing in English just does not get any better than this. In this era of degraded, lazy, sloppy spelling, usage, and grammar, Peter Tonkin provides plenitudes of pithy prose that delights the mind as it intrigues the senses. Moreover, his books contain very few of the egregious errors so unfortunately and unnecessarily present in electronic texts. As a theater historian, I must also commend his skillful incorporation of the greater and lesser Elizabethan playwrights and his delightful speculation upon the life of William Shakespeare, which strikes me as far more convincing than the trumped up notions of those who would dispute his authorship due to their personal, petty prejudices.

My only regret. for now, is that I have read all of the books available from this highly skilled author and must wait patiently for his next publication. May it come soon!
